We’re excited to offer a 5-week Beginner Fly Tying Class at Montrose Anglers starting January 2026! Whether you’re brand new to tying or looking to build a strong foundation, this class is designed to give you the skills and confidence to start creating your own effective flies. The course will be taught by Al Ritt, a respected fly-tying instructor with more than 40 years of experience in the fly-fishing industry. Al’s teaching style is hands-on, patient, and packed with knowledge—making him an incredible resource for new tiers.
Throughout the class, you’ll tie 8 essential and versatile patterns: the Zebra Midge, Woolly Bugger, Jigged Frenchie, Jigged Hare’s Ear, Elk Hair Caddis, Adams, Chubby Chernobyl, and Foamback Humpy. Each pattern is carefully selected to introduce you to fundamental techniques like dubbing, wrapping, proportion, working with hair and foam, and understanding how materials behave in the vise. By the end of the course, you’ll not only have a full lineup of proven flies to fish, but also the core skills needed to continue tying and experimenting confidently on your own.
The class is $200 per student, and all tools and materials are included, so you can show up ready to learn without needing to purchase anything ahead of time. We’ll meet Tuesday nights from 6–8 PM on the following dates:
1/13, 1/20, 1/27, 2/3, and 2/10
Classes will be held at Montrose Anglers. Space is limited to just 8 students to ensure plenty of individual instruction, so be sure to reserve your spot early.
Feel free to reach out with any questions at (970) 249-0408, info@montroseanglers.com, or by swing by the shop.
We look forward to tying with you!
