Big Cimarron - The Cimarron river below Silverjack reservoir has been fishing very well! It is currently at a great flow for light dry dropper fishing. Using small ants & hoppers for your dry fly and small mayfly nymphs as your dropper has been very effective.
The Forks - The Forks are fishing well although flows are quickly dropping. We'd recommend fishing a single dry fly such as a Stimulator or Elk Hair Caddis in sizes #16-18
Fly Recommendations : Chubby Chernobyl 12 - 16, Stimulator 12 - 18, Elk Hair Caddis 12 - 18, Psycho Prince 14 - 18, Perdigon 14 - 18
Fly Rod: The Cimarron River and the Forks of the Cimarron is a great place to break out the little rods. We suggest fishing a 3wt or 4wt fly rod in 7'6" or 8' length. The shorter length allows you to bushwhack easier and get to the honey hole with less struggle. Using a lighter weight rod creates an exciting experience while fighting fish.
Fly Reel: A solid fly reel is nice to have on the waters found within the Cimarrons but on these smaller waters your fly reel will be mainly used as a line holder. We suggest using a Click and Pawl reel that matches and balances out your fly rod nicely.
Fly Line: Fly Line in our opinion is the most important thing to your setup on smaller streams and creeks. We suggest using a floating fly line that will present flies delicately while also being able to load your fly rod with minimal back casting space.
The Cimarron River and its three forks—Middle, East, and West—offer outstanding small-stream fly fishing in the heart of the Cimarron Mountains near Silver Jack Reservoir. Cold, clear flows from the reservoir and alpine tributaries support healthy populations of wild browns, rainbows, and native cutthroat trout. The forks are true high-country gems, with eager fish, light pressure, and classic dry-fly water. Look for strong summer hatches of caddis, PMDs, and stoneflies. Easy access and breathtaking scenery make the Cimarron system a must-fish destination for adventurous anglers.
