The Uncompahgre River, or the “Unc” as it is locally known, births high in the San Juan Mountains and heads northward through the towns of Ouray, Ridgway, and Montrose as it makes its 75 mile voyage until its confluence with the Gunnison River in Delta. The Uncompahgre River runs through the town of Montrose and may be the best kept fly fishing secret on the western slope of Colorado. The town stretch of the Unc offers great fly fishing for browns, rainbows, and cutbows, year around. Strong midges hatches occur near daily throughout the winter months, while terrestrials and stoneflies make up these trout's diet for the summer months. Our experienced guides will take you on a journey, where you'll have the opportunity to catch wild rainbow and brown trout in one of the healthiest rivers in the state.
The Uncompahgre river is known for its high summer flows, which usually turns anglers away from fishing this stretch of the river but not us! We like to do things differently on this stretch. Combining the efficient aspect of floating and the methodical side of walk wading together, leaves you the ability to experience the Uncompahgre river in a unique new way!
On this trip we use the boat as a source of transportation to reach spots that are unavailable by foot and then pull over and fish the spots much more methodically and slower. Save your time walking a few miles to only reach a few holes, when you can float through and hit every hot-spot! We do some fishing out of the boat depending on skill level and fishing conditions. It is not uncommon to float a longer stretch in the late summer and focus our efforts on fishing hoppers along the banks!
When you are not fishing, lean back and take in the exciting aspect of floating the river as it bends and braids through the heart of Montrose. Depending on which stretch you are floating, you will get to experience the splashy ride of going through the Montrose White Water Park! This trip is perfect for fly fishing enthusiasts who is looking for something different. Our guides will teach you everything you need to know about casting, reading the river, stragety/techinques, and choosing the right bugs to be succesfull on the water. We offer a variety of trip options to suit your needs, from half-day trips to full-day excursions. Whether you're looking for a relaxing day on the water or a challenging adventure, we've got you covered. At the end of the day, you'll return to Montrose with memories that will last a lifetime.
