May/Early June: Due to low snow pack and runoff, fishing the Gunnison River in May through early June should be solid. Fishing nymph rigs in May using worms, stoneflies, eggs, and other "junk" bugs will produce some solid fish. June will deliver some great conditions this year for stonefly, caddis, and yellow sally hatches.
Mid June/End of June: In mid-June we will see prolific hatches of Salmonflies, Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies, Green Drakes, Caddis, and PMDs. This time of the year can provide excellent dry fly fishing opportunities!
July: July is one of the most consistent times to fish Gunnison River, with strong Caddis, Green Drakes, and PMDs hatches in the mornings and evenings. The main attraction is the hopper bite—terrestrial patterns like hoppers and ants fished tight to the bank produce exciting, visual takes. When dry fly action slows down, switching to a hopper-dropper rig is extremely effective.
August: In August we will still see some solid early morning dry fly action on terrestrials, but fishing hopper-dropper rigs are the primary approach throughout the month. We like to start our trips early to beat the heat and take advantage of the best fishing windows.
September/October: These two months offer ideal conditions on the Gunnison—cool weather, less people, and consistent all-day fishing. We primarily are fishing nymph and hopper-dropper rigs during this time. Streamer fishing can be effective this time of the year with the browns prepping for the fall.
